Kingdom of the Son- A Prayer Safari...

July 24^th Deerfield Lutheran Church was treated in worship to a Prayer Safari put on by the Vacation Bible School Children. The Safari was organized and led by Jenn Brattlie and Jen Lees; music was directed by Jane Holland; skit participants were Seth Mulhall, Micaela Schultz, and Richard Holland. Through song, sign language, movements, stories, and crafts the children embarked on adventures to discover that God Listens, Provides, Forgives, Protects and thatGod Rules! The safari helped children learn The Lord’s Prayer.

July 20 through the 23 had the church filled with a great Safari Adventure as over thirty young adventurers discovered the Lord's Prayer. The hot weather made the water games directed by various adults and high school students a fun way to cool off. Storytime/lessons were held in a large tent set up downstairs; crafts were also done. The adventure began each night with a light supper to get our participants energized.

A BIG THANK YOU to Jenn, Jen, Jane, Jesi, Jessy, Justin, Debbie, Seth, Micaela, Richard, Jody, and many others who made this week a big success!

Deerfield Lutheran’s Confirmation Ministry is intended and designed to supplement and complement the Christian education and faith nurturing that parents have been doing in the home. This time of preparation is to learn more about Christianity and grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Relationships are a strong focus of our program – relationships between students and God, between students and their parents and leaders, and among students and their Christian peers.

What has traditionally been a two-year Confirmation ministry has been spread out Over four-years to give faith-questioning teens many opportunities to learn and experience the love of God in a way that is age-appropriate, family-centered, and is meaningful and relevant to young people’s lives.

Students in 9^th grade focus on becoming disciples of Jesus Christ through their lifestyles, beliefs, values, and involvement in the church and greater community. This stage of confirmation is a time of growth and deeper commitment. Students are matched with an adult “Mentor/FRIEND” during the spring of 8^th grade. Mentors are members of Deerfield Lutheran who are committed to sharing their faith journey and guiding students through activities and discussions that focus on Christian discipleship. Through Wednesday night sessions with mentors, students will explore their personal faith in Jesus Christ and prepare to affirm their Baptism. A mentor supports parents and is an advocate for youth in the congregation. THANK YOU to our mentors for 2011 class!

Remembering the Bible Stories.

Families of the Sunday School kids were invited to attend Sunday School on the 17th and celebrate the Bible lessons that had been learned throughout the year. They decorated eggs and had various treats. Then in each family basket, items were placed that represented the bible verse or story they had studied. Palm Sunday-April 17th

Palm Sunday worship April 17th began in the Narthex as the Sunday School sang "Hosanna" and waved palm branched. This Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. It is remembering when Jesus entered Jerusalem and the crowds greeted him with celebration. The Handbell Choir played as some in the congregation processed in.

It will be five days later that the same crowd will shout to "crucify Him'!

Confirmation Retreat

The Confirmation Class this year is small but mighty. They had a retreat held at the Church on Saturday, April 16th. The students and their mentors completed an Emmaus Walk as they prepared for their Confirmation Day on May 1st.

CHICKEN AND BISCUIT

The Women of Deerfield Lutheran held its Chicken and Biscuit Dinner on April 14, 2011. This event helped raise funds for a lift at that church with construction to begin the middle of May and completion early this summer. The biscuits and gravy making was overseen by Jerry and Don.

Women of the DLC dished up the delicious chicken and biscuits. This time for sharing and visiting with friends was much enjoyed on the cold April evening. Helping serve the tables and clean up were younger members of the church. It took many helping hands and feet to make this event a success; the Women of Deerfield Lutheran thank all who attended this annual event and who ordered carry-outs.

Lenten Soup Suppers and Worship

Lent brings with it the Wednesday night Soup Suppers: soup, bread and dessert. There is always plenty!

The 2011 Lenten Midweek Services focused on the ways to pray..a prayer bowl, body movement, beads, with friends, over a cup of coffee. Prayer can be done in various forms and any place.

The evening ended with the Holden Evening Service... the Final Blessing:

May God, Creator bless us and keep us,

May Christ be every light for our lives,

May the Spirit of Love be our guide and path, for all of our days.

EPIPHANY or "Twelfth Night"

Thursday, January 6th was the annual Burning of the Greens Service in the church parking lot. A wonderful assembly of people gathered at 4 o'clock to take down the decorations in the sanctuary and then have a chili potluck meal. The burning of the greens celebrates the Light of Christ coming into the world on one of the darkest (coldest) nights of the year. This was followed by a brief Epiphany Service.

"Beside the burning trees we remember, O Lord, how you spoke to Moses from a burning bush revealing your Name and then how with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night you led your people out of slavery into the freedom of the promised land... besides these burning trees, Lord, we also remember how the light of your stir shining in the darkness of the heavens, led magi to the birth of your son, our Savior, Christ, the Lord..."

"Let us follow the light of the heavens and seek your Light which illuminates our path. Besides these burning trees may our hearts be enlightened to find the Christ who gives us freedom, who gives us a new covenant of love and who, in so giving, gives light to a darkened and troubled world."

It's customary at Epiphany to mark symbols of blessing above doorways. People can mark their front door with these symbols: the year, the initials of the traditional names for the Magi-- Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar-and four crosses representing the four seasons. Order the symbols this way: 20+C+M+B+11.

In the new year, this marking serves as a blessing over the household. Be artistic and creative-use chalk or decorate cardboard with designs. After the doorway has been marked, offer this prayer:

"God of love, you sent your Son to his home with us. As the Magi welcomed Jesus with gifts on bended knee, so we welcome you into heart and home. Bless each room with your presence and peace that we may be filled with your Spirit of joy. In your holy name we pray. Amen."

A Baby Changes Everything

During worship on December 19th Deerfield Lutheran Sunday School presented “A Baby Changes Everything”. Pre-kindergarten through middle school students told the Christmas story in song and tableau. Micaela Schultz began the service with “A Baby Changes Everything”; the Deerfield Lutheran Handbell Choir with violinist, Laura Connor offered “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” and “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

A Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship with communion will be on Friday the 24^th at 4:30 pm.

A service of carols will be Sunday, December 26^th at 9:00 am.

Decorating the Sanctuary

With a great group of volunteers the church was busy on December 5th decorating the sanctuary. The tree and garland where up in record time. Then the Sunday School did a quick run through for the program...KEEP SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12th OPEN AT 9:00 AM. The Senior Choir was also practicing in the upstairs fellowship hall. There is lots of life going on with the walls of DLC. Come and share the many blessings God has given us.

Advent Brunch

The Annual Advent Family Brunch was held Saturday, December 4th. What a wonderful time of fellowship put on by the Youth and Family Committee. KAIR members helped serve. Following the wonderful brunch, Ruby Haag presented "Why Aprons?" Some members brought special aprons to share. There were various items to buy also. The proceeds from this event are benefit the H.E.L.P. Fund. (FYI: The lift is going to be installed in 2011)

Food and Faith

The KAIR group has spent part of last spring and this fall using a curriculum helping them understand the relationship between our Food and Faith. There were fun activities and Bible stories that allowed the students to think and talk about food, faith, and hunger.

As a final activity they prepared a meal for their families so they could sit down and enjoy it together. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. There were also several meals delivered as a means of outreach to the community and sharing their "bounty" with others. This is the group who will be collecting UNICEF donations the next two Sundays.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF

UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) is the "driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized." Our KAIR group will have UNICEF boxes in the narthex to collect change for this important cause. They will also be collecting food for our local food pantry on Oct 24 and Oct 31. In this time of harvest and thanksgiving, Let us remember those who are in need.

CROP WALK On Sunday, October 10th participants of all ages from Deerfield Lutheran and Grace Lutheran in Cambridge walked, ran, pulled or pushed 1- 3- or 5-miles for the CROP Hunger Walk. Thanks to their efforts dollars was collected for CROP; 25% of this will go directly to Deerfield Community Food Pantry or Cambridge Community Food Pantry. A verse in the hymn dedicated to the participants: "Not all here walk with strength or speed but all can give to those in need. And as we serve you, may we know you walk with us where'er we go."

September 19th was the first day of Sunday School. Gilbert and Stephanas were ready with the "Top Ten Reasons for Attending Sunday School"!

Steph: Boys and girls, every Sunday you may have to decide whether you are going to get up and come to Sunday school Well, here's Gilbert's list of the Top Ten Reasons for attending. Are you ready for this?

Gil: Reason Number 10. You don't need a ticket to get in.

Steph: That's right Gilbert. No one makes you purchase a ticket to attend ss.

Gil: Reason Number 9. There's plenty of parking.

Steph: That's if you chose to drive. You can even walk to ss

Gil: Reason Number 8. There's nothing good on TV.

Steph: Boys and girls, moms and dads, just how many infomercials can you tolerate.

Gil: Reason Number 7. It's a great place to wear your cool new clothes.

Steph: So true.

Gil: Reason Number 6. There's all-you-can-eat fellowship treats.

Steph: Yum. Yum.

Gil: Reason Number 5. It's a great place to visit with your old friends and make new ones.

Steph: I met you at Sunday School, Gilbert.

Gil: Indeed you did, and my Number 4 Reason for attending Sunday School. We have great music led by the one and only Jane Holland.

Steph: SS music rocks!

Gil: Reason Number 3. You can listen to great stories.

Steph: Yes, the stories Jesus told called parables!

Gil: Reason Number 2. If you have a test in school or a big game you can pray.

Steph: You still have to study and practice, but prayer always helps!

Gil: That's true. And the #1 reason for attending SS. Drum roll please. If you do, you will be keeping the promise made the day you were baptized.

Steph: And what's that, Gilbert.

Gil: That you will be brought to the services of God's house, and taught about God by studying God's word. And that is the Number 1 reason to come to Sunday School

Steph: Let's pray: Dear Jesus, we have come into your house and gathered in your name today because we want to be with you. We have also come to Sunday School to learn more about you and your word as we study the Bible together. Amen

Volunteer Appreciation Sunday

Our relationship and contacts with one another stimulate and sharpen us in our walk with God and life, in general. We're able to grow and gain insights and share God's workings in the lives of others by volunteering within the church and community. It is through helping and volunteering that we're able to spread the word and love of God. On September 12th, Deerfield Lutheran recognized the many volunteers within our church. There are many important ministries going on at Deerfield Lutheran and it is the volunteers and participants that help US MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Members of all ages have been "the hands and feet of Christ" here at the church. This special blessing was given:

Dear God,

We give you humble thanks for the people who serve you in our congregation here in Deerfield. For those who help us worship each week by volunteering as ushers, greeters, lay assistants and lay readers, for those who sing in our choir or play our bells and for Jeff and Angie who direct them, for Jane and Lois and Angie who accompany us and for Laura and our worship committee that plan our worship. For Deb and our fellowship committee and those who set up the coffee and hot tea, for those who bring delicious treats, for those who knit prayer shawls and deliver them. We give you thanks. Today as we begin Sunday School we give you thanks for Jen and Jenn and our education committee and all who have volunteered and will volunteer to teach Sunday School. We thank you for Rachel and Jane and our youth & family committee and our Middle school KAIR group kids and our High School D-Logs and those adults who assist them as they grow in faith and serve others. We thank you for Jodell and our Mission committee and for Kari, Liz, Tammy and Claudia our resent adult leaders and for all the youth and adults who have been part of our mission teams. We thank you for Arlyn our treasurer and Eric our finance chair and those who serve in the ministry of finance as they navigate these challenging times. We thank you for Dick and the property committee and all who volunteer to keep up our building and grounds – especially Steve who does all our mowing. For Donna and Jerry who engage in the unending job of cleaning. We thank you for Dot and Sue who are heading our HELP fund drive to make our church fully accessible by building an elevator. We thank you for Don and Jerry, men who cook! We thank you for Mary and our outreach committee and all who volunteer to provide meals, clothing and support so that all will know Christ's love and compassion. For Todd our Council President and Jackie our Council secretary who help oversee all our ministries and with the help of God's spirit guide us in all our deliberations. We thank you for those we might forget who lead our women's circles and participate in our men's breakfast groups and for those who are not part of any committee but still give of their time to serve their neighbor in need. Blessing of Backpacks

Celebrating the beginning of another school year, brought students, teachers, coaches, parents to a service of blessing the items we use in our work everyday. It was called the "Blessing of the Backpacks" but there were ipods, cellphones, briefcases, and other tools and stickee notes that were sent on to college students.

God bless these backpacks and the children who will be carrying their books in them to school, bless our children so they will continue to learn and grow this year. God bless these post-it notes that will be sent those attending colleges or vocations schools that they will be a reminder to study hard and also to learn and grow this year. God bless these (Blackberries, brief cases, and other tools) and bless those who use them, t hat in our daily vocations we might continue to learn and grow as good stewards of talents and skills. Bless us to be a blessing to others.

Clothing Exchange

Preparing to get ready for school can be stressful especially this year with dollars tight for many people. The Outreach Committee organized a clothing exchange for members of the church and community. Though it was not as successful as had been hoped, it will be done again. The clothes that remained were donated to the Community Center.

Rainforest VBS 2010

Deerfield Lutheran Church ELCA held their annual Vacation Bible School from July 28th through August 1st. Thanks to gardener Bill Holland the church was transformed into a rain forest for thirty something three year olds through third graders from our community to explore the Bible in a rain forest setting. There were lots of hands to help these young rain forest explorers grow in their spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. Jennifer Lees and Jennifer Brattlie planned and organized the entire five days with Jane Holland doing music each day. Debbie Haberkorn prepared delicious meals for our hungry explorers and was our lead baby holder. Jessie and Jim Haak planned and led our adventure games. Brent Braatlie and Justin Lees helped with food and errands. The young explorers were guided by a dedicated team of adults and youth volunteers who assisted with crafts, skits, games and music. These extra special helpers were: Jodi Fisher, Jess Steen, Rick Holland, Brandon Lemke, Dan Steen, Alison Moerke, Samantha Amman, Rachel Amman, and Rachel Lokken. During worship on Sunday, August 1st the explorers shared what they had discovered as they retold Jesus' parables of the Lost Sheep, the Good Samaritan, and the Sower through music and drama. Following worship everyone got to enjoy some tasty treats as they explorers shared their amazing crafts with their parents and worshipers. The adventure will continue when Sunday School resumes in September! SonQuest Rainforest VBS - 2010

What an exciting night! There were lots of young explorers at Deerfield Lutheran who were learning about following Jesus on a Life Changing Adventure through songs, stories, crafts, games, and yes, food. They are using all these activities to discover a relationship they have with Jesus Christ, the Son of God: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) Parents alongwith Middle schoolers and High Schoolers and College Students were there to join in the activities. There is room for YOU! Join us tomorrow night starting at 5:30.

What you can do...

The start of another school year and cool months will be here before we know it.

Everyone is affected by the economic challenges. The Outreach Committee would like to help by organizing a school clothing exchange/give-away for our own families and others in the community. We are requesting members of our congregation consider donating gently used, outgrown, or new school clothes, i.e., tops, pants, dresses, mittens, scarves, coats, boots, etc. Adult and teenage coats, mittens, scarves will also be accepted. Please no torn, stained, soiled items. Items may be dropped off anytime before August 28th in the education wing of the church.

Please invite your family, friends, neighbors to this clothing exchange. The items will be available in the church basement on Sunday, August 22nd and Sunday August 29th, 10:00 am to 11:00 am during fellowship hour. Thank you for your consideration and participation. Stewardship of Treasure

When we look at what God has give us, materially, we rightly want to give portion back to God to use for ministry. We want to make our community and our world a better place - a reflection of the Kingdom of God - and for that to happen we want to provide our church with the financial means necessary.

Here are some facts to consider:

A dollar in the offering in 1960 is now worth 16 cents.
A dollar given in 1980 is now worth 40 cents.
Are you giving at 1960 or 1980 levels? I can assure you our expenses are not at those levels.
The cost of one meal at a fast food restaurant is MORE than than the average family gives weekly to their congregation.
In the average congregation 80% of contributions come from 20% of the members.
People earning $100,00 or more proportionally contribute only about half as much as people earning less that $20,00.

Now some thoughts:

You don't wash your rental car. You do take good care of something you own.
When your tires are bald you don't buy cheap recaps, you want something that will last and keep your family safe.
Items like your house or car payments aren't paid on a whim just when you feel like paying them, but regularly. To provide ministry through the year we pay our expenses throughout the year. That's why pledging and regular giving are so crucial for church vitality

First Communion 2010

July 18th was First Communion. These young people had prepared in a hands on way...made their own communion cups, a banner, and then the bread for use on this special day. We welcome them to the communion table.

Footprints in the Sands...

Day 5- Friday - The Mission Team 2010 has left their footprints in the lifes and community of Swan Quarters, North Carolina....

The team was up bright and earl to leave their Youthworks site and head to Ocracoke Island. It was a great morning and they were able to relax on the deck of the ferry - a good 2 hour ride. I'm sure there will be lots of pictures. After eating lunch at a local establishment, they were off to the beach. "Ocracoke Island, accessible by water or air, is part of Hyde County. It is one of the barrier islands of the Outer Banks of North Carolina where the pirate Blackbeard is known to have once roamed. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore, with the Pamlico Sound on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, its 16 miles on sun-swept wilderness beaches." It was a great afternoon being on the beach, looking for shells being inthe water (THERE WAS A LIFEGUARD ON DUTY), and playing volleyball in the sand. They did have to more from the area as there was some lightning at about 4 O'clock. Th National Park is not to far from the sight where they will be camping so...

They need to be in line for the ferry about noon and plan to meet SL's parents around 2:30-sih and then head home. they will see how far they drive before stopping and finding a hotel. More tomorrow on their mission of being "the Hands and Feet of Christ".

Day 4 -The team was again at Kid's Club and Outrageous Sports Camp. Kayla and Shelby really enjoyed working with the kids and were all smiles as were Samantha, Brooke, and Serena who worked there. Seth did a basketball workout with the kids today and was acknowledge for his willingness to step in and help where needed. Ian and Steve were in there helping the kids with drills not sure if today was football or soccer. Tonight was the community cookout and the kids from the clubs and camp along with the homeowners were there, there was lots of people and lots of food consumed. After the cookout was the footwashing done by Kari and Liz who made each "washing" personal for the kids and the chaperones. Then back to pack up their things .. Throughout the week Deerfield Lutheran again did an outstanding job and did it with positive attitudes and showing respect to those they met. They've worked hard and will have stories and experiences which they will carry with them for a long time. Thanks to all you parents who made this trip possible! Tomorrow they will pack the vans at 7:15 am to make sure they get in line at the ferry for their journey to the island, some R&R, and camping.

Wednesday, June 23rd

Day 3
It is very hot and humid in North Carolina. Our boys were involved in Outrageous Sports Camp - Ian and Steve set up courses and did drills with the kids for football; the kids were very impressed. Seth helped with football and also basketball; tomorrow he will be doing more with basketball drills. (BIG QUESTION--did Pastor take part in the drill?) Yes, Pastor Lar took pictures of them doing sports with the kids.

The women were off to Kid's Club and had a great day. They all enjoyed the chance to interact with the younger kids; they really did an outstanding job with the kids. A couple notes: Kari has a wonderful picture of Sam reading to a young child; Brooke did a great job with the little kids who loved riding on her shoulders (and she said she was not fond of little kids but the kids did not know that). There were kittens and a donkey for the kids at the club to see and enjoy. Kari & Larry ate lunch together today because both the groups started out at the same rural country store. Later on Claudia brought all of them Ice Cold Root Beer and Popcicles which was very appreciated! It was a good day.
Tonight after supper they attended the local Baptist Church which they had worked on earlier in the week for worship. The Pastor and his family were very gracious and appreciative of the group- this was the church that had found dry bedding for our team the first night. Everyone seemed to be looking forward to this experience. At Church Time for the team, Kari and Liz have been leading them.

Tomorrow evening is the footwashing service...it should be quite moving. Your kids can fill in some of the blanks here as to how it went for them.

Oh, the crabbing went very well. I know Kari got some little ones but had to release them...not sure what others caught.

Tuesday, June 22nd

Day 2:

Another hot day that even sunscreen did not save some from getting burned.
Shelby, Serena,Tammy, Kari, and Samantha spent the day in the hot sun painting deck rails and floors. It was a bit disappointing as the homeowners were not around so there was no interaction...tomorrow in Kid's Club will be better. Claudia, Liz, Kayla, Brooke were at the church doing work. Larry and "the boys" were cleaning and scrubbing, priming and painting. (they were done early and after taking trash to the dumpsite wound up at the convenience store watching the World Cup for about 20 minutes...)

Tonight was an Olympics game ... our group looked good even though they came in last. THE STYLE AND FLARE OF CLAUDIA AND SERENA HAD THEM TAKE FIRST PLACE IN THE KLEENEX PULLING CONTEST!

Tomorrow the boys and Larry will be in the outrageous Sports Camp while all the girls will be at Kid's Club.

Monday, June 21st

FIRST DAY:

After discovering that many of the sleeping bags got wet in the down pour, the local church brought in blankets for the tired kids last night. They were tired last night, but what a difference a night's sleep makes.

Today was very warm but the work crews were busy..up at 5 or 6 and off to work. They were scrapping decks, cleaning walls of a local church and weeding. Yea, Claudia was weeding someone else's garden as Sigurd takes care of her flowers here (the rain makes his watering easy). Ian and Steve were busy scrapping decks and Seth put the Borgrud talent to work with power tools in hand and putting on a screendoor. They've been interacting with the other kids and the home owners, hearing stories and realizing that they are "just like my grandmother". There is lots of enthusiasm even though the temps are high. Larry is amazed at the amount of food the kids (boys) can consume; the food has been good. Samantha walked by with her book.....more later

TONITE: CRABBING AND STORYTELLING WITH CAPTAIN MARTY. Tonight they are off to listen to stories and do some crabbing and take pictures of some wonderful sunsets.

Sunday, June 20th

The Mission Team arrived at Swan Quarters about 7 o'clock. They hit heavy rains but made it through and were not the last group to arrive. ( Deerfield is often known to be late arrivers but not this time.) All the drivers seemed in good spirits and were getting ready for their adventures tomorrow. They had a wonderful supper when they arrived and though it had been over 100 today, it was down to 70 because of the rain. Oh, a couple notes of interest...this is the mosquito capital of the area and the air conditioning in the school will hopefully be fixed tomorrow. The kids are busy tonight meeting the other groups.

Saturday, June 19th

Their bags were packed and they were ready to go...two vans of smiling teens and adults left the lot. Besides their own belongings they had school supplies for the children of SwanQuarter. The team arrived at Dunbar - midnight (One o'clock their time). They hit bad construction - 45 minutes stand still. Things are going okay and everyone seems to be in good mood despite the LONG DAY! They hope to leave for SwanQuarter by 9:00 am - tomorrow will not be as long a day for them. Hope they all get a good night's rest.

The Naperville Bikers of 2010.....

The Naperville Bikers were hosted by several families in our congregation who let them have a hot shower and place to sleep. (After the last couple of rainy days it was nice for them to relax a bit.)

In their mission statement this group of high school students from Naperville Central HIgh School and other schools describe themselves as "striving to share the love of Jesus Christ with those around us...aspire to be shining lights for God in this dark and broken world." Fellowship of Christian Athletes - Naperville Bikers

For a number of years Deerfield Lutheran Church has hosted a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group from Naperville, Illinois. These high school bicyclists, and their adult leaders, bike 300 miles in 5 days! Along the way they stop and visit elderly in nursing homes and grace us in Deerfield with their presence for a night.

This year11 students and 6 adults are making the pilgrimage. They arrived Wednesday (June 16th) in Firemen's Park, joined host families for dinner at the Ice Cream Social, and lead us in song, fellowship and fun at the Community Center. This is a wonderful group of young adults who live their faith. Next year, you might think about being a host or joining in with the fellowship!

Ice Cream Social 2010

Would it ever stop raining? Yes, it did in time for the annual WELCA Ice Cream Social held on June 16th. The menu of BBQ and Hot Dogs, Lois's beans, WELCA's special potato salad, plus homemade pies and ice cream were a big hit. The Fireman's Park had people lined up to eat these wonderful treats. Jenny served as the hostess, collecting trays and directing people to get their ice cream from Roberta (finally got a picture of her at work). There were so many who worked a long day to make this event a success and they even still found time to enjoy a great meal. The Naperville Bikers came all the way from Illinois for the event. A special thank you to all who helped make the pies and salad, and those who set up and served this annual fund raiser. This year the H.E.L.P. Fund will be the recipient of the proceeds. (The fund continues to grow as we strive to make our church accessible to ALL people!)

The 2010 Mission Team met for final preparations and paperwork. They will be leaving the morning of June 19th for Coastal North Carolina. We ask that you keep the five chaperones and the nine young adults in your prayers as they journey to be the hands of feet of Christ.

"Coastal Carolina is well-known for its sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. From quaint shops to historic landmarks, there is plenty to see and do in this calm and scenic region of North Carolina. Hurricanes and unemployment have led to increasing poverty in this community, but you can help. By participating in work projects, your group can help restore the hurting areas of this community. This summer, bring your kids to SonQuest Rainforest VBS for an experience of discovery they'll never forget! Best of all, SonQuest Rainforest will take your kids beyond what they can explore with their senses to discover a living spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This adventure is open to kids ages 3 and up starting on Wednesday, July 28th through July 31st. It will run from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm and on Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:30 am. To help the Deerfield Lutheran Middle School KAIR Group better understand the relationship between our faith and our food, the past few weeks have been spent using Just Eating? Practicing Our Faith at the Table. Using Jesus' stories and looking at the affect food choices have on our health, the earth and others, the students went outside the classroom and visited a restaurant, collected dollars and then with the guidance of Michelle Schmidt, seven young people went grocery shopping. In carrying out the Mission Statement of the church the students were serving others and being the hands and feet of Christ as they purchased and delivered food for the Deerfield Food Pantry.

They purchased 210 non-perishable items, used 14 reusable grocery bags and submitted 3 Cash-4-Community Center Pig receipts. Through this experience and with the help of the Deerfield Lutheran Congregation they learned the priceless lesson of being compassionate and giving. The students who were involved in the shopping were Rachael Ammann, Andrew Schmidt, Laura Schmidt, Noah Lazzara, Micaela Schultz, Anna Haag and Mara Shelley.

A time to thank the mentors for all they have done for our confirmands.

The Mentor Program Builds Relationships in Christ.

At Deerfield Lutheran Church, there is a shared belief that the greatest witness of faith in any person’s life comes from relationships with other faithful people, especially parents and other significant adults in the church and community. Preparing youth to affirm their baptism is a life long process: at baptism, Faith Chests are given which include materials to help parents share their faith with their child; Bible are given at 3 years old and 3rd grade; chalices are made for first communion at 4th grade; 6th grade through high school involves focused learning on the Lord’s Prayer, Ten Commandments, and the Baptismal Creed, a deeper understanding of scripture as it relates to their lives, and service activities to involve them in the greater community. This time of preparation is to learn more about Christianity and grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Relationships are a strong focus at Deerfield Lutheran - relationship between students and God, between students and their parents and mentors, and among students and their peers.

What has traditionally been a two-year confirmation ministry is now spread out to give faith-questioning preteens and teens many opportunities to learn and experience the love of God in a way that is age-appropriate, family-centered, and meaningful and relevant to young people’s lives. Between the spring of 8th grade and the spring of 9th grade, students focus on becoming disciples of Jesus. Students are matched with an adult mentor - a church member who commits to sharing their own faith journey and guiding a student in exploring Christian beliefs, values, and involvement in the church and the great community. The relationship between mentor and mentee is one of growth and deeper commitment to faith. Through discussions of faith-life issues, fun group activities and service projects that focus on Christian discipleship, students learn that confirmation is just the beginning of their life of faith.

CHICKEN AND BISCUIT DINNER

to raise funds for the elevator/lift

The Women of Deerfield Lutheran held its Chicken and Biscuit Dinner on April 14, 2010. This event was to help raise funds to put in an elevator/lift at that church. The biscuits and gravy making was overseen by Jerry Schultz and Donn Johnson. Marge Peters finally took a moment and let Phyliis Rude and Cara Lazzara dish her up a plate so she could rest. Cheri Lemke was also busy serving. There was a thumbs up on the meal by Gordon and Sally Mortensen and Dick and Sharon Berge along with Linda Johnson and Shirley Hanson enjoyed their meal. Dick was able to answer questions anyone had about the proposed elevator/lift. Helping serve the tables were younger members of the church. It took many helping hands and feet to make this event a success; the Women of Deerfield Lutheran thank all who attended this annual event. They are looking forward to next year and the ability for those attending to use the lift to get to the lower level. .

Confirmation Retreat 2010...

The 2010 confirmation class met for a retreat on April 10th to have some reflection and time with their mentors. They took an Emmaus Walk around town as they talked about their faith and where they go from here. The morning ended with communion and a light lunch.

Once again we gather for worship in the church that has been stripped of all ornamentation. This is Good Friday - the day as Christians we remember Jesus' death on the cross. The cross is the central figure today. The cross is the central symbol of our faith; Jesus died for the sins of the world so that we might have eternal life. Today, we pray, reflect and sing solemn hymns. The events of THIS day, Christ's death on the cross, are paramount to our Christian faith.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the word,

but to save the world through him." John 3:16-17

Maundy Thursday

With a handful of parisheners, Maundy Thursday was observed at Deerfield Lutheran. On this day during Holy Week we observe Jesus' celebration of Passover with His disciples, known as the Last Supper and what we call Communion. (Luke 22: 19-20) It was here that Jesus washed the disciples' feet as an act of humility and service - an example that we should love and serve one another. (John 13: 3-17) In Latin the word "Maundy" means "command" and Jesus commanded to his disciples that they love and serve one another.

The service of washing your feet was moving. As some members had their feet washed by Pastor Larry, all those assembled sang "Jesus Took a Towel" based on John 13 and music by Chrysogonus Waddell.

The Refrain is:

Jesus took a towel and he girded himself,

then he washed my feet, yes, he washed my feet.

Jesus took a basin and he knelt himself down,

and he washed, yes, he washed my feet.

Friday night, March 19th, the Deerfield High School Gym was set for a banquet of Prime Rib or Chicken Cordon Bleu prepared by Todd Dukes - Exceptional Catering and served by the Deerfield Lutheran High School Mission Team. The team will be traveling to Coastal North Carolina in June. More than 150 guests enjoyed the meal and took part in raffle drawings and a silent auction that was made possible by the generous donations from area businesses and individuals. Marv Dorhorst did a wonderful job as the evening's MC.

Lent is a time to grow in faith, a time to grow closer to God and to one another by praying together, learning together, serving together and yes, eating together. So, we gathered in the fellowship hall and shared our soup suppers and looked at how the Bible talks about food, the importance of healthy eating, the community Stone Soup, and the discussion on Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture. We laughed, sang, ate, prayed, and enjoyed being together. Each evening we closed using the Holden Worship Service which allowed us to all leave with a feeling of peace and calm. It is our faith community that prepares and supports us. These are some of the moments we shared Wednesday nights during "Eating Together".

Next week on Friday, March 19th, the "Deerfield's Got Talent" fundraiser will be held at the Deerfield High School gym with doors opeing at 6:00 pm. The Misssion team is going to Coastal Shores, NC in June to serve as the hands and feet of Christ.

This year at Deerfield Lutheran Church we will focus especially on eating together! Lenten Midweek Soup Suppers will begin Wednesday, February 24th and continue through March 24th. We will eat together at 5:30 pm; we encourage families as well as those who live alone to join us for this opportunity to enjoy a home cooked meal. You can volunteer to prepare soup, bake bread, and desserts as well as set up and clean up. Each week beginning around 6:00 pm (as we are enjoying desserts) we will take time to worship together using the Holden Evening Prayer Service. We will also learn about eating from a biblical perspective as we enjoy a short drama presented by our "Souper Theater Players." You can signup to be in these plays also. Mark you calendars now and plan to eat together this Lent! Come and join us at Deerfield Lutheran Church and feed the body and then feed the soul at out Lenten Worship Services

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING SUNDAY

It was SOUPER BOWL of CARING SUNDAY, February 7th at Deerfield Lutheran complete with a tailgate party. The KAIR groups (Kids Active in Religion--Middle Schoolers) collected $366.10 and 34 non-perishable items for our local food pantry. They were part of a nation wide group that transformed Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest youth-led weekend of giving and serving, and fighting hunger and poverty in their local communities. This year 6,875 groups across America generated $6,772,966.00.

The Season of Epiphany

Beginning with the star that the Wise Men followed to Bethlehem, Epiphany is a time for people to discover the light shining throughout the world. Epiphany is a “revealing, a manifestiation, an unveiling.” It is during this season of the church year that Jesus is shown as the light of the world. During Epiphany, God is made manifest or obvious to all through his earthly son, Jesus. The readings during this season deal with who Jesus is, his adult ministry, revealing to the world that he is the Son of God through his disciples, and our mission today to continue spreading the Good News and god’s love to all we meet.

The Wise Men, the Magi who were astrologers from distant lands, followed a star to Bethlehem to worship and give gifts to this small King are celebrated on January 6^th. WE celebrated Epiphany with year with the Confirmation Classes putting on a play and having a special service. Afterwards there was a fellowship reception.

On the 10^th of January, Christians celebrate the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the River Jordan where the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3) Jesus is revealed to the crowd as the Messiah. It is this season that the readings follow the disciples of Jesus as they learn to follow Jesus and is a time for us to remember what it means to follow Jesus. Jesus as the Son of God calls all Christians to spread the good news to all corners of the earth. On February 14, the Transfiguration of Our Lord will be celebrated. Jesus is shown to be God on earth to his disciples as he is transfigured on a mountaintop with Moses and Elijah and reminding us of the promise of our own resurrection.

While Advent always covers four Sundays before Christmas and Lent is always forty days, Epiphany’s length varies. Epiphany lasts from January 6^th through the day before Lent. This year that is Tuesday, February 16, 2010.

The decorations in the sanctuary are green to symbolize growth and life that as Christian we have with Christ and through the mission of the church.

The Best Sunday School Christmas Pageant of 2009!

December 20th was the Sunday School Students telling of the Christmas story through word and music. The evening began with special music by piano students sharing their Christmas carols with those in attendance. With Lois's accompaniment the congregation sang, "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing" and then the program began. Middle schoolers narrated the story and elementary school students recited their parts. There were many highlights from the sheep to the Little Drummer Boy to the angels and the Holy Family. The Sunday School ended their program with the meaning of "C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S" and the message that we all need to "Go Tell It On The Mountain".

The Second Sunday in Advent, December 6th, was the day for new members, the dedication of the carillon in honor of Mary Borgerud, and Gilbert and Stephanas telling the story of St. Nick and Black Bart. The fellowship following service was a time for renewing friendships and making new ones; a time to relax for a moment and reflect on the "reason for the season"!

December began with the Annual Advent Brunch. This brunch was put on by the 2010 Mission Team. Half of the proceeds go to the elevator fund so the church will be accessible to everyone. This was the introduction of the team to the congregation. Most of the members were able to help with this service project and time for team building.

Music Makers!

Music is a powerful form of religious expression; at Deerfield Lutheran we are blessed by many who are part of this ministry. In the Bible over 1150 verses reference words related to music. We appreciate music and music makers. The nostalgic songs are not the only ones that we appreciate. The newer music like the song "Here Am I, Lord,” spirituals like "Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley," majestic hymns like "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," and praise songs like "Lord, I Life Your Name on High," and "Majesty." In fact, we sing a great variety of styles of music in our church. As the Advent and Christmas seasons approach, music gives an even stronger message of our faith. We look forward to having you share the gift of music. The great quote from Augustine says that anyone who sings "prays twice," praising God in both word and music. Thank you to those who provide the congregation with music!

Reformation Sunday

On All Hallow's Eve 1517, Martin Luther walked across the main square of the small town of Wittenberg to nail his Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church. Luther was protesting the sale of Indulgences to raise money for the building of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Indulgences - the word literally means "a kindness" - were a way the church had developed to deal with the consequences of our sinfulness and to raise money. It was complicated, but basically it meant that by making a donation of money you could be assured your soul, or the soul of a dead relative, would go to heaven. One of the most notorious peddlers of these indulgences, John Tetzel, used a little jingle to get that idea across to the common people:

"As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, at once the soul up to heaven springs."

Because of his study of the Bible Luther had come to doubt the legitimacy of these indulgences. He also had begun to question the spiritual value of relics. In Wittenberg, All Saints Day included a viewing of the Castle Church's huge collection of holy relics - 17,433 altogether - which included 9 thorns from Christ's crown, 35 splinters of the true cross, straw from the manger, one piece of Jesus' swaddling clothes, one piece of bread from the last supper, one vial of milk from the Blessed Virgin Mary, and so on. Relics and indulgences raised alot of money. But Luther's 95 Theses challenged their legitimacy. He argued that relics and indulgences "made out of God a merchant, who would give the Kingdom of Heaven not freely, out of grace, but for money and human achievement." Luther not one to mince words said, "through indulgences the devil sets up shop in our soul." Soon Luther came to see that relics and indulgences were only the tip of the iceberg. The bigger problem was the common belief that human good works bring about our salvation without grace. This is how Luther talks about this in a sermon:

You have often heard me say that the Christian life has two dimensions: the first is faith, and the second is good works. A believer should lead a devout life and always do what is right. But the first dimension of the Christian life, faith, is more essential. The second dimension, good works, is never as valuable as faith. However, people of the world adore good works. They regard them to be far higher than faith.

But we should be careful that we don't elevate good works to such an extent that faith and Christ become secondary. If we esteem them too highly, good works can become the greatest idolatry. This has occurerd both inside and outside the church. Some people value good works so much that they overlook faith in Christ. They preach about and praise their own works instead of God's works.

Faith should be first. After faith is preached, then we should teach about good works. Because it is faith---without good works and prior to good works---that takes us to heaven. We come to God through faith alone.

Imagine you're a pastor sitting with one of your flock, hearing Luther say these things even in a film-- it can be dangerous. An elbow jab in the ribs, the gleeful remark, "I guess I don't have to bother with my tithe to Deerfield Lutheran, huh pastor." Or, "Pastor, I'll bet if you held your hand in the flames like that John Tetzel did even us Norwegians would give a few extra dollars."[That's a tease to get you to see the Luther film we'll finish watching after worship November 1st.]

When Luther was asked: If you take away all human effort, all good works, what will you put in there place? His answer was simple: faith alone. Human beings are saved by grace alone through faith. We are saved on account of what God has done in Christ, and faith in Christ alone, not our own good works. Luther came to such a radical understanding by studying the Bible. The Bible made Luther certain this was true. So on Reformation Sunday it was fitting we gave Bibles to our third graders!

In a recent book: The Essential Conversation: What teachers and parents can learn from each other. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot talks about what is essential for public education, "From my point of view there is no more complex and tender geography than the borderland between families and schools." She goes on to describe how a real partnership between parents and public school teachers is essential for a child's education. Luther realized the same thing 500 years ago. Besides translating the Bible so people could read it, he wrote the Small Cathecism to help parent with the support of their pastors to teach the essentials of Christian faith in their homes. In our congregation, following Luther and the best practices recommended by educators today, we are nurturing the tender geography between home and congregation. This is how the Reformation Luther started 500 yrs ago will continue today! [Check out our faith chests for the newly baptized as part of this ministry to nurture faith!]

For Martin Luther, faith is a living relationship we each have with God because of Jesus Christ. In faith, we don't just believe in Jesus, we take a hold of him. We have him present in our heart and life. Luther who loved the kitchen and kitchen images said, "by faith Christ and the Christian are baked into one cake."

By faith alone we are baked into one cake, gathered into this church we call the living Body of our Lord, and are set free from sin, death, and the power of the devil. We're given the freedom to live a new life, a rich abundant life that will lead to heaven. Not because of what we have achieved on our own, but because of what God has done for us. As Dr. Martin Luther would say, This is most certainly true!

CROP WALK

On Sunday, October 11th about seventy participants of all ages, some pulled in wagons and others pushed in carriages, walked 1- 3-, or 5-miles for the CROP Hunger Walk.

Thanks to their efforts over $1400 was collected; 25% of this will go directly to Deerfield Community Food Pantry. A verse in the hymn dedicated to the participants sums up the reason: "Not all here walk with strength or speed but all can give to those in need.

And as we serve you, may we know you walk with us where'er we go."

Worship and Fellowship One of the important things about Sunday worship is the opportunity to hear God's word and how it impacts our daily lives. Worship Service ... At Deerfield Lutheran music is an important element in the worship experience. There are a variety of accompanists: Lois on the organ, Angie on the piano as well as Jane our guitarist. The music is also enhanced by the church adult choir, various soloists, our Sunday School choir. On Rally Day, Jane was accompanied by the wonderful "musical noise" of our children. Throughout the year there is always the unexpected musical or lyrical additions to the service. Another unique element in the services at Deerfield Lutheran is the children's sermons told by Gilbert - the Lion of Faith - and Stephanas - the Clown of Life. These sermons are for the child in all of us. Worship encourages all of us to care for others by sharing Christ's Love!

Rally Day Sunday, September 20th!

Wide smiles, music, meeting parents and teachers. Rally Sunday was the start of a new season of learning for God's disciples of all ages…young and old. The theme this is year will be "Fruits of the Spirit". The youngest disciples did dance and music, had an over of the year, and colored special bookmarks to be handed out to visitors. The whole Sunday School will be taking part in the CROP walk on October 11th. The KAIR (Kids Active In Religion - grades 6 thru 8) designed their course for the year and started organizing how they will help with the CROP walk.

In the youth room, the North Carolina Mission Team began its journey by getting to know each other and setting goals.

Shining Floors....

The shining floors and fresh paint have the Sunday School rooms ready for the young disciples. Thanks to Floyd, Jerry, Dick, Russ and Donna the rooms have been made a pleasant place to learn Bible stories, songs, and activities that will be part of the "Fruits of the Sprit" curriculum for the 2009-2010 year. As the floors reflect so will the children reflect the light of Christ and the love of God.

It's Thursday Morning...must be Men's Breakfast!

The road to Cambridge leads twelve or so men from the church to a wonderful breakfast at the local restaurant across from the Golf Course. Then, a Bible study and an often lively discussion about local, state, and world events. This is held the first and third Thursdays of the month. The men arrive at about eight o'clock and meet for about an hour. All men are welcome to join the group!

Now, if this is too late. Yes, we said too late. Once a month beginning at 5 am (if the pastor does not over sleep) there is a waffle and egg breakfast held at the church upstairs fellowship hall. This is free of charge. Pastor Larry's waffles are becoming a hit so stop in any time between 5 and 8 those mornings for a breakfast treat, a cup of coffee, a quick "Hi" or stay a while and visit.

Youth Mission Trip for Summer of 2010

At the organizational meeting held on Tuesday, July 14 those in attendance voted 10 to 1 for going to :

Coastal Carolina: Hyde County, North Carolina

June 20 - 25, 2010

Along the eastern edge of North Carolina is Hyde County. Beautiful inland waterways surround the community and tourists are drawn to the area for its beaches, historic homes and peaceful character. This charming community was home to the infamous “Blackbeard the Pirate” in the early eighteenth century.

YouthWorks will be in the rural village of Swan Quarter, located on Swanquarter Bay, an inlet of Pamlico Sound.

The beauty and serenity of this region has often been interrupted by hurricanes. As a result, construction costs have soared and the lack of affordable housing has become a significant problem and 19 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.

Activities Provided by Youthworks: Go crabbing (a local term for crab fishing); Canoeing on Lake Mattamuskeet; Attend a local church service; and Community BBQ.

Cost $268* does not include travel and non-youthworks lodging

The next meeting to determine the number going and the type of transportation to use will be on Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30 pm in the fellowship hall of the church.
